to have you with us. it's january 16. >> it is. and i'm michelle griego. two people are confirmed dead this morning after a helicopter crashed into a crane in england. this happened during rush hour in the heart of central london. >> it did. cbs news's rita nissan joins us live from london to explain how this happened and it happened i guess right near the british spy agency. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. this really took place in the heart of central london right at the height of the morning rush hour. skies are clear now but this morning there was heavy fog and that's why authorities say the pilot of the helicopter was trying to divert to a nearby airport and two people did die. the pilot of that helicopter, also one person on the ground. people on the ground say they saw the happen the flying very fast up the river and then it spun out of control when it hit that crane. and that crane is some 50 stories up in the air. it is part of a residential building that is being built here in central london. >> you know, rit
. and good morning. it's tuesday, january the 15th. i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm michelle griego. time now is just about 4:30. freezing temperatures continue to grip our state. but we do have a warmup coming our way. with more on that here's lawrence. >> almost spring-like temperatures, one week every january we have one week that feels like spring but today it's cold. out the door freezing temperatures, everywhere you go numbers dropping down into the 20s and the 30s right now. you can see that air making its way from the land to the sea that offshore flow continuing so it is cold and going to stay cold for the better part of the morning and then things begin to moderate over the next couple days. freeze warnings are up in the north, south bay and east bay valleys, frost advisory inside the bay, very cold temperatures early on this morning. by the afternoon, a little warmer into the 50s. but we could see some 60s maybe mid-60s coming up in the latter part of the week. we'll talk about that coming up. >> thank you. >>> the cold weather we're having
crisis still under way. michelle kosinski has the latest. good morning. >> hi, willie. >> it appears they have raided the facility again trying for rescue more hostages. would not man hid will under his bed. others inside a suspended ceiling. u.s. official was quoted as saying some americans did escape, but not all are accounted for. what is known at this bp gas facility in a remote desert is that algerian army tried to free hostages held by a heavily armed islamic gang. some militants were killed and so were some hostages. algerian officials say at least six others were wounded. some hostages managed to escape. bp says some are already on a plane to london. stephen mcfall was able to get away from the gunman, who made him wear a vest with explosives. his family and young son at home overjoyed. >> what's the first thing you'll do when you see him? >> give him a big hug. and i won't let go. >> reporter: it is still unknown exactly how many americans were here. militants said seven. a u.s. official has been quoted anonymously as saying at least some escaped. militants called the stunni
